Types of Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)

There are various types of evaluations that can be requested through an IEE, depending on the student’s needs and areas of concern. Below are some common types of IEEs:

  1. Psychoeducational Evaluation
Assesses cognitive abilities, academic skills, processing strengths and weaknesses, and behavioral functioning. This type of evaluation is often requested to determine the presence of learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or ADHD.

  2. Speech and Language Evaluation
Evaluates the student’s communication skills, including receptive and expressive language abilities, articulation, fluency, and social communication. This is important for students suspected of having speech or language impairments.

  3. Occupational Therapy Evaluation
Focuses on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and the student’s ability to perform tasks needed for daily functioning, such as handwriting, organization, and self-care.

  4. Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)
Aims to understand challenging behaviors by identifying triggers, patterns, and the functions of behavior. The FBA leads to the development of behavior intervention plans to support positive behavior changes.

  5. Psychological Evaluation
A comprehensive assessment that looks at cognitive, emotional, and neurological functioning. This type of evaluation is often used for students with complex learning and behavioral profiles, including those with suspected autism, traumatic brain injury, or significant cognitive challenges.

  6. Bilingual Educational Evaluation
For students who are English learners (ELs), a bilingual evaluation is conducted to assess the student’s abilities in both their native language and English. This ensures that language differences are distinguished from potential disabilities.

Rights and Responsibilities

  • Parental Rights
Parents are entitled to request one IEE at public expense for each district evaluation with which they disagree. They may also opt to obtain an IEE privately at their own expense at any time.

  • District Responsibilities
The school district must respond to IEE requests in a timely manner and provide guidance on the process. They must also consider the results of the IEE in any educational decisions, even if they do not fully agree with the findings.
